Idea:
This cognitive activity will keep toddlers engaged because they move their
whole body when jumping, hopping, and throwing.
Beginning: Model how to put the bean bag on the matching
circle. Talk about how the colors are
the same. Check for understanding by
putting two colors together that do not match.
Ask if the colors are the same.
Encourage the child to match the beanbags to the corresponding colors by
putting them on the colored circles.
Middle: Show the child where to stand on the tape on the floor. Direct him to throw a bean bag to the matching colored circle. End: When all the bags are on the stoplight, retrieve them, give them to the child and begin the process again. This activity should end when the child’s interest level goes down. Extensions and
Modifications: To modify the activity, encourage the child to walk to the stoplight
and put the beanbags on the circles. To extend the activity, move the tape
where they stand farther away from the stoplight. A variation would be to tape the beanbag to
the wall so the child can throw it to the circle in a more upright
position. This activity is appropriate for older children, too!
