Goin' On A Bug Hunt...
Name of Activity:
Goin on a Bug Hunt
Originating Idea: A spider crawled across the toddler room floor. All of the children were very interested in watching it move across the floor. I built this lesson upon their interest of spiders and insects.
Materials Needed: Sensory Table, Easter Basket Grass, Assorted Plastic Bugs, Tweezers, Plastic Tongs, Bug Boxes or Critter Cages.
Curriculum Content: KDI# 12 Moving parts of the body. KDI #23 Object Permanence KDI#28 Locating Objects. #27 Number.
Beginning: Introduce the activity by talking about the spider that the class saw or by just talking about bugs children have seen before. Allow for discussion. Show the children the bugs that they will be looking for. Allow them to handle them. Demonstrate how to use the tweezers and tongs. Explore the bug boxes with the children.
Middle: During the activity, sing the song, “Goin’ on a Bear Hunt” but replace the word “Bear” with the word “Bug.”
End: With the children, count the bugs that are in their bug boxes. Introduce the concept of more than and less than.
Extensions and Modifications: To modify this activity, replace the tweezers with tongs and use larger plastic bugs. Add more bugs so younger learners can feel successful when bug hunting. To extend the activity, add smaller bugs, and decrease the number of bugs in the grass.
