Beginning: Do this with each child…Sing a song to the tune
of "Where Is Thumbkin?", Where is (insert the baby's name)? , Where
is (insert the baby's name)?, Here I am; here I am. (Gently pat the
baby on the belly as you say the words.), How are you today, (baby's
name)?, Very well, I thank you. Clap your hands, clap your bands. (Help
the baby to clap his hands.)
Middle: Give each baby a shaker toy. Keep one for yourself. Shake your rattle and at the same time, chant: “Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, Stop!” Repeat. Encourage the children to shake their rattle to your chant. Encourage them to hold theirs still as you hold yours still. Repeat. End: Tell the children that you will be singing another song, but after that, it will be time to put the shakers away for another time. Sing another song. Shake your rattle to the chant. Ex. “ The Ants go Marching.” This activity should end as the infants’ interest is diminished. Tell the children that it is clean up time. Put your rattle away in a container, encourage each child to do the same. Extensions and Modifications: To modify the activity, use smaller bottles for easy grasping. To extend the activity, add other instruments like triangles, bells, or different sounding shaker toys. |
